This season, "VAN" from AUBERGE is a garment that elevates the casual category of sweatshirt to the realm of a work of art.
The model name "VAN" is an homage to the vintage items, commonly known as "Great Figure Sweatshirts" (featuring Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, etc.), which were produced by Spruce in the 1960s and are now sought after by collectors worldwide.
1. Beethoven depicted not by "printing" but by "full embroidery"
The original vintage pieces featured portraits of famous figures rendered using a discharge printing technique. However, Mr. Kobayashi of the auberge dared to choose the mind-boggling method of reconstructing it using **"high-density embroidery"**.
A portrait of Beethoven is intricately stitched onto a gray body using threads of a similar color. The three-dimensionality, shading, and overwhelming sense of weight and depth that cannot be achieved with prints. The way the light hits it reveals its expression, which now exudes an elegance more like a painting than a pattern on a sweatshirt.
2. The "ideal terry cloth" achieved with sinker knitting.
The base body is made of soft, comfortable 100% cotton terry cloth. Although knitted on an efficient sinker machine, the fabric is deliberately finished in a way that ensures the reverse loops stand up firmly, resulting in a soft and fluffy texture that resembles fabric slowly knitted on a loopwheel knitting machine.
The vintage sweatshirt beautifully combines "just the right amount of firmness" and "a soft, enveloping feel," allowing you to appreciate its high quality every time you put it on.
3. The intellectual playfulness residing in the universal "gray"
