AUBERGE / TUCSON.
NATURAL BLACK and CHAMPAGNE GOLD,
I received two colors that were not dyed.

My AUBERGE TUCSON shoes have arrived. They come in two colors: NATURAL BLACK and CHAMPAGNE GOLD.

This jacket embodies one answer that AUBERGE has arrived at: "Using the natural color of the material itself." NATURAL BLACK is made from the natural black wool of alpacas raised in the Andes Mountains. CHAMPAGNE GOLD is the natural champagne color of rare mohair sourced from South Africa. No dyes are used in either color.

Chimayo village is located in New Mexico, USA.
A village with a tradition of hand-weaving that dates back to the Spanish colonial era.
AUBERGE then redesigned the jacket that was created in that setting.

The Chimayo Jacket is a traditional folk craft originating from the village of Chimayo in northern New Mexico. Chimayo has a hand-weaving tradition dating back to the 17th-century Spanish colonial era, creating unique textiles that blend the geometric patterns of the Pueblo Native American people with Spanish and European weaving techniques.

Originally made as Chimayo vests or rugs, the Chimayo jacket originated in the 20th century when it was adapted into a jacket as a souvenir in tourist areas of the American Midwest. "Because of its origins as a souvenir, it is an item that has characteristics that make it difficult to wear from a modern pattern-making perspective"—AUBERGE understands the difficulty of wearing it as is and has updated it with a modern size balance.

AUBERGE TUCSON — About fabric design

TUCSON fabrics are designed based on native rugs (woven fabrics) used for Chimayo vests. The warp threads use undyed, thick linen yarn , while the weft threads use a 6-ply yarn of the original material (alpaca or mohair) and alpaca . Furthermore, undyed wool yarn is sandwiched between these threads to achieve a stable physical structure and high density in the fabric.

Despite its substantial weight, TUCSON fabrics possess a unique texture and firmness that makes them feel weightless when worn—this is the core of the design process leading to their creation.

— A modern reinterpretation by AUBERGE

TUCSON reconstructs the Chimayo jacket without being bound by its traditional pattern. The naturally draping shoulder width and the not-too-high sleeve head setting are modern touches that were not present in the original Chimayo jacket, contributing to a more comfortable fit.

Furthermore, some pockets incorporate details from UK workwear. This jacket, which brings together geographically and temporally distant contexts—Native American tradition and British workwear—is what makes it uniquely AUBERGE. A deep respect for tradition, yet without confining it to existing contexts—designer Manabu Kobayashi's aesthetic is condensed here.

  • Fabric design inspired by the traditional craft of Chimayo village, native rugs.
  • Naturally draping shoulders and a sleeve cap that isn't too high—a modern refresh for comfortable wear.
  • Some pockets feature details inspired by UK workwear.
  • Body lining: 54% Linen, 46% Cotton (lightweight and elegant)
  • Sleeve lining: 54% Rayon, 46% Cotton (for smooth sleeve movement)
  • Leather parts: Sheep Leather (for reinforcing pocket openings)

— I. TUCSON — NATURAL BLACK

Alpaca wool comes from alpacas raised in the harsh natural environment of the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains. Some of these alpacas have naturally black raw wool. NATURAL BLACK uses this naturally colored black alpaca wool. No dyeing is done whatsoever; the raw color of the wool is used to make the yarn, the fabric, and finally this jacket.

It is fundamentally different from dyed "black." It is not a uniform jet black created by dyes, but rather the natural gradation and depth of color derived from the raw wool. It is the black of a living material that shows subtly different expressions depending on how the light hits it. The exceptional warmth, natural luster, and unique smoothness inherent in alpaca—these are all characteristics that can only be obtained when natural raw wool is used as the material.

— II. TUCSON — CHAMPAGNE GOLD

This rare, naturally colored champagne gold mohair comes from South Africa. The yarn used in CHAMPAGNE GOLD is made from this undyed mohair, which AUBERGE has spun in its own unique way.

This thick mohair, with a fineness of 34/36 microns, possesses a strong firmness and resilience. While mohair is generally perceived as soft, lustrous, and delicate, this thick mohair has a unique presence that sets it apart. The "variations in shade from lot to lot" and "individual differences" inherent in the natural color derived from the raw wool, as well as the "natural color fluctuations that cannot be expressed through dyeing," are what give the color CHAMPAGNE GOLD its one-of-a-kind character.

The buttons are made of braided leather in champagne gold. The color of the fabric and the buttons complement each other naturally, a testament to AUBERGE's meticulous attention to detail.

ARZACH STYLING

TUCSON NATURAL BLACK × Denim Chinos × Turtleneck
A simple outfit featuring a natural black alpaca jacket paired with a white or gray turtleneck underneath. Combining it with a plain cotton turtleneck from DRESS or a golden cash turtleneck from HERILL highlights the depth of the black color and the luster of the alpaca. Keep the bottoms casual with denim or chinos.

TUCSON CHAMPAGNE GOLD × Black bottoms (contrasting outfit)
To make a natural gold jacket stand out, it's most effective to stick to dark tones for your bottoms, such as black or navy. Pairing it with NEAT wool slacks (BLACK) or AUBERGE PANTIN (DUSTY NAVY) allows the gold of the jacket to make a sophisticated statement.

A contrast between two colors (NATURAL BLACK × CHAMPAGNE GOLD)
These two colors of the same jacket possess completely different personalities. NATURAL BLACK adds a deep, quiet presence that refines your style, while CHAMPAGNE GOLD brightens your look with a warm, radiant glow. Rather than asking which color to choose, these two colors seem to be asking which "you" you want to be.
